    the story

Oceanside Glass Tile is made from silica sand, an abundant natural resource, and up to 85% recycled glass content, including over 2 million pounds per year from curbside recycling programs, mostly post-consumer glass bottles.

The recycled content of the tiles varies with the color blend; darker colors have a higher recycled content than lighter colors. Once these ingredients are melted together, casters hand ladle the melted glass into iron molds to produce tiles. The tiles are then cooled and hand cut, and the trimmings are recycled back into the tile making process.

Oceanside Glass Tiles are handcrafted with a broad range of translucent and iridescent colors; each batch is made to order with custom options including custom blends and custom gradients. With the variety in size, color and texture that Oceanside Glass Tile offers, you can create the tile of your dreams.

    performance

Glass tile is very strong; the breaking strength on all 4” x 4” field tiles is 900 pounds per square inch of force. Glass tiles are impervious to water, and heat/thaw resistant.

The iridescence is not a coating but is baked into the glass, while many similar looking tiles have an iridescent layer painted onto the tile which can scratch off. The matte finish is true tumbled glass, not an etching which would need a sealer. Iridescent tiles are generally more durable and can be used for exterior floors, whereas non-iridescent tiles are recommended for interior floors and walls.

Note: Oceanside Glass Tiles are non-porous and will not take a sealer.

    at home

Glass tiles are completely inert and require no sealer, so they are a great choice for maintaining healthy indoor air quality.

    in the community

Oceanside Glass Tile supports volunteer involvement programs for employees to work with community partners to match resources with community needs in many ways, including cash donations, in-kind donations, sponsorships of nonprofit organizations, and volunteering.

    on the planet

Oceanside Glass Tile recycles over 2 million pounds of glass annually from curbside recycling programs as well as recycling the glass from their trimming process. Natural earth oxide pigments are used for color in these unique, hand-crafted tiles. The tiles are very durable and long-lasting which adds to their sustainability. Oceanside Glass Tiles can be used for LEED points on the basis of recycled content.

    where can i use it?

Oceanside Glass Tiles are recommended for a variety of projects including bathrooms, trim, countertops, walls, shower surrounds, swimming pools, fountains, backsplashes, and low-traffic flooring area.

Glass tiles, like glazed ceramic tiles, can be very slippery, especially when wet or in large rooms where kids build up speed as they run through. Use these tiles with caution in these situations. For maximum slip resistance, use small tiles or tiles with a textured surface. The additional grout joints add considerable traction.

    how much do I need?

    1” x 1” sheets measure 11 3/4" x 11 3/4" (nominal).

For most jobs, we recommend ordering 10% overage. For complex jobs, add 15-20% overage.

Any sheet glass tile is paper fronted; they do not have a mesh backing. Use thin set mortar and standard grade sanded grout; never use epoxy grout.

Tiles can be cut with a diamond blade or glass nippers. Using a blade designed for ceramic tile may chip the edge. Smooth rough edges with a sanding stone. Always use safety goggles and gloves when cutting glass.

For translucent tiles the thin set is partially visible. To prevent the thin set showing through, smooth out the trowel marks and back butter every tile.

    how do i maintain it?

Use non-abrasive cleaners such as Superclean or vinegar & water.
