    the story

Teragren bamboo butcher blocks are hard and durable with an intriguing and subtle parquet pattern of end-grain bamboo into modern kitchens. Teragren’s furniture-grade butcher blocks are made with a formaldehyde-free and food-safe adhesive and are perfect for table tops as well as kitchen counters and islands. It is available unfinished or prefinished with a food-safe mineral oil/beeswax finish.

    performance

Teragren uses Moso bamboo grown in the Zhejiang province of China. There are more than 1,500 species of bamboo and Moso (Phyllostachys pubescens) is among the hardest, with dense fibers that make for strong timber and beautiful, durable bamboo butcher blocks. Bamboo has greater compressive strength than concrete and about the same strength-to-weight ratio as steel in tension. When the bamboo reaches maturity at 5-1/2 to 6 years, its fibers are at peak density and it's the best time to harvest.

Bamboo is more resistant to moisture than hardwoods with less contraction and expansion with changes in moisture during installation and throughout the life of the material, even in humid or dry climates.

Moso bamboo timber has been used in construction for thousands of years. In Asia, homes, bridges and multi-story scaffolding are made of Moso timber. In South American earthquake zones, bamboo has been used to build thousands of homes because its flexural strength helps the homes withstand temblors. Plywood made from Moso performs well as flooring for truck beds, trains and containers. Other uses of Moso bamboo include furniture, beds, mats, chopsticks, baskets, musical instruments and handicrafts.

Healthy for the air in your home, this countertop is formaldehyde-free and is food-safe.

    on the planet

Bamboo is renewable and sustainably harvested from plantation-grown bamboo, grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. Teragren requires the bamboo to be sustainably harvested at maturity, this avoids product performance issues like cupping and warping that is associated with young, soft, and often inexpensive bamboo that is harvested much too soon. The result is a quality product and a plant source that will remain healthy, harvest after harvest.

Bamboo contributes to efforts to reduce global warming. Bamboo's leafy canopy releases 35% percent more oxygen than a comparable cluster of hardwood trees, especially when you consider that the bamboo re-grows and reproduces a canopy many times in its lifespan. In the renewing process, the plant grabs carbon from the air and holds it within its stalk and root system where, in nature, it is not released until the soil in which the plant decomposes is turned. Products made from bamboo take that carbon out of circulation. Teragren bamboo products harvested and manufactured correctly can last for many generations, keeping carbon locked up over the life of the products and helping to offset carbon usage that occurs in shipping products to market.

    LEED Qualifications:
