    the story

Capri cork tiles are a beautiful and natural surface for your floor. A completely natural material, cork is warm, quiet, and comfortable underfoot. The resilience of this flooring is very supportive of your joints and back, so it is especially great in areas where you have to stand a lot.

The tiles are available in a wide range of styles and colors, and in either solid or veneer.

In solid cork tiles, the pattern and color on the surface goes through the entire thickness of the tile and can be sanded and refinished as needed. Solid cork is often the preferred cork for medium to high traffic areas, especially in those areas where decades of use are desired.

Veneer cork has a thin layer of color affixed to the top of a solid tile. The veneer cork styles offer patterns that are not available in homogeneous construction. Veneer cork is suitable for residential and light commercial use.

    performance

Cork floors are durable and easy to care for. With normal wear, your cork can last for generations. Because it contains millions of tiny air cells per square inch, cork has a multitude of stellar qualities. Its cellular structure creates a shock-absorbing effect, which makes it an exceptionally comfortable surface to stand on. Air within the cells also acts as insulation, so cork flooring can reduce heating bills as well as noise.

Cork’s natural defenses protect it from assaults that can ruin other floors. It contains a waxy substance called suberin, which repels insects and inhibits the growth of mold, mildew and microbe colonies. Its resilience allows it to “give” when something moves across it, whereas hard flooring surfaces will scratch or gouge.

Capri cork tiles are available in standard thickness of 3/16” and standard tile size of 12”x 12”, though other sizes are also available. Capri tiles come pre-finished with three coats of a durable, water-based matte polyurethane. The finish is recoatable, should high-traffic areas begin to show wear.

Capri cork tiles have been treated with an anti-curl treatment to the back of all tiles. This extra process helps balance the tension created on the top of the tile from the application of the polyurethane. The anti-curl treatment enhances the stability of the tiles and enables them to remain flat prior to installation.

    at home

Capri cork tiles create a warm, comfortable, resilient surface that is gentle underfoot, will not spread flame, and is inherently resistant to molds, mildews, and common pests.

    Contributes to LEED points for:

    • Materials & Recources MR4.1, MR4.2, & MR6 credits
    • Indoor Enviormental Quality IEQ4.1 & IEQ4.4 credits

To qualify for IEQ4.1, must use Wakol Contact adhesive D3540, a solvent and VOC free adhesive, and if the material is finnished at the jobsite, you must use Loba, a waterbased polyurethene finish.

    on the planet

Renewable, sustainable and recycled, cork is a very eco-friendly product. The entire cork oak tree has uses. The cork in our floors is a by-product of the wine bottle stopper industry and even the cork dust created in manufacturing is collected and used as fuel. There is no waste in a cork manufacturing facility regardless of the end product.

Going back countless generations, the cork industry has proved itself to be a sustainable one. The trees are not harmed when their bark is harvested for processing. In fact, a cork oak tree can thrive for anywhere between 150 and 250 years.

The market for cork provides an incentive to keep forest cover on arid land, preventing 5 1/2 million acres from turning to desert. These forests in turn provide habitat for many native species including the endangered Iberian Lynx. For these reasons and more, Portugal (the largest producer of cork) has made it illegal to cut down these trees. Harvesting schedules are set by law to ensure that each tree has nine years to regenerate its bark.

    where can i use it?

Cork tiles can be installed in any room, as long as the subfloor is acceptable. They are suitable even for full bathrooms, as the cork itself does not absorb moisture.

Let your creativity fly with vivid patterns of the Capri’s tile line. Tiles of contrasting colors can be arranged to create checkerboard patterns and borders.

    how much do i need?

These tiles come in 36 sqft per box for 12" tiles, and 72 sqft per box for 24" tiles.

how do i install or apply it?

Please note, it's generally recomended to let the cork acclimate in the enviorment that it will be installed in 3 days before installing.

Instructions if using Wakol Adhesive D3540

Apply adhesive with the paint roller evenly to both the back of the cork tile and the substrate. The entire back of the tile must be covered. Avoid adhesive pools.

The amount of adhesive used should form a film of adhesive which is evenly glossy when dried. If the tile did not get covered completely or you are unsure about coverage, a second coat should be applied after the first coat is dry. If adhesive gets on the front of tiles, it must be removed immediately with water.

Cork tiles can be pre-coated prior to coating of the substrate. If this is done, once dry, the tiles can be stored front to back, in their boxes until installation. Pre-coated tiles must be installed within 24 hours of being coated.

On porous substrates, it might be necessary to apply a second coat of adhesive after the first has dried. Adhesive should form an evenly glossy film when dried.

When both surfaces are coated on the same day, tiles must be installed 2-3 hours after adhesive is dry. If tiles are pre-coated, they must be installed 60-90 minutes after substrate adhesive is dry.

Stay off adhesive as it is drying.

When adhesive films on both surfaces are transparent/clear and dry to the touch (no adhesive transfer to the hand) tiles can be installed.

Lay tiles directly into place so they fit tightly. Do not slide or pull tiles into position.

Use a soft headed rubber mallet to set the tiles by hitting around the entire surface, including all edges, corners and the center of each tile. Ensure that hard to reach areas and areas along walls are properly set. The impact force of the mallet strike causes the two adhesives films to merge and become one film. This is vital to the strength of the adhesive bond.

Within 1 hour of installation, roll entire floor with a 100 lb roller in two directions using a hand roller in areas where 100 lb roller can not reach.

Light foot traffic is allowed on the floor upon completion. No cleaning, finishing or placement of furniture should occur for 24 hours.

    how do i maintain it?

Maintenance of cork is easy, requiring simple vacuuming/sweeping and washing with mild detergent and water. Please remove spills/liquids immediately.

Lasting beauty can be achieved by purchasing a top quality material and providing proper on-going maintenance. This begins with remembering two key properties of cork, its ability to fade with exposure to light and the fact that it will react to heat and humidity.

The shades of cork, created by the baking process, are natural and when subjected to sunlight, cork will fade. A solid cork floor that has faded may be sanded and refinished and the original color will come back. However if UV rays are not blocked, fading will occur again. Using drapes or other systems to protect your floor from excessive light will slow down this process. Cork will naturally yellow or mellow with age. Uneven exposure to light sources may cause uneven ageing so it is a good idea to rotate furnishings periodically.

In the kitchen, use a non-rubber backed rug in front of working areas such as in front of the stove and sink to prevent local premature wear. Weight distribution is a key factor in preventing indentation. To minimize impressions in the resilient cork, furniture should have proper protectors under feet and furniture with casters should have wide casters.
