    the story

Install a new floor in a day with beautiful, eco-friendly and easy to install EcoCork click planks.

Natural and sustainable, Cork is a nationally protected resource of Portugal. The cork used in our cork floors comes The cork bark is harvested from the tree every 9 to 11 years. And the trees are kept alive and in production for generations. At maturity a typical tree can produce upwards of 450 pounds of cork per harvest.

Natural Cork is still harvested by hand in the traditional method leaving the habitat intact and with minimal impact on the overall environment. The cork forests in Portugal make use of otherwise arid land. Often the cork “farms” are combined with other uses such as raising cattle or growing other crops in and among the trees. These combinations allow local farmers maximize their use of the land.

    performance

Because it contains millions of tiny air cells per square inch, cork has a multitude of stellar qualities. Its cellular structure creates a shock-absorbing effect, which makes it an exceptionally comfortable surface to stand on. Air within the cells also acts as insulation, so cork flooring can reduce heating bills as well as noise.

Cork’s natural defenses protect it from assaults that can ruin other floors. It contains a waxy substance called suberin, which repels insects and inhibits the growth of mold, mildew and microbe colonies. Its resilience allows it to “give” when something moves across it, whereas hard flooring surfaces will scratch or gouge.

Cork offers excellent insulation against noise. A rating system called sound transmission class (STC) assigns a number to quantify acoustical insulation; an STC rating of 50 means loud speech is not audible across the barrier. Our cork planks, installed over a concrete slab, have an STC rating of 52.

Cork planks do not perform well in damp or steamy rooms, and they are not as easy to repair as glue down cork tiles.

EcoCork is milled with a specially shaped "click" together tongue & groove center core. This sophisticated and highly accurate milled shape ensures a very tight connection during installation and beyond. Click technology is a glue-less installation resulting in less mess, less fuss and less time on the job. Additionally, floors that are clicked into place can also be un-clicked for easy repair.

    Click planks offer several advantages:

    • Subfloor preparation is less stringent
    • The floor 'floats' and is less visibly affected by expansion and contraction normal to wood products
    • Plank can be installed below grade (with suitable vapor barrier)
    • Installation is relatively quick
    • Thicker product provides better insulation

    at home

EcoCork floors create a warm, comfortable, resilient surface that is gentle underfoot, will not spread flame, nd is inherently resistant to molds, mildews, and common pests.

EcoCork floors are produced with adhesives and finishes that meet the stringent E1 standard for emissions.

    on the planet

Renewable, sustainable and recycled, cork is a very eco-friendly product.

Going back countless generations, the cork industry has proved itself to be a sustainable one. The trees are not harmed when their bark is harvested for processing. In fact, a cork oak tree can thrive for anywhere between 150 and 250 years.

The market for cork provides an incentive to keep forest cover on arid land, preventing 5 1/2 million acres from turning to desert. These forests in turn provide habitat for many native species including the endangered Iberian Lynx. For these reasons and more, Portugal (the largest producer of cork) has made it illegal to cut down these trees. Harvesting schedules are set by law to ensure that each tree has nine years to regenerate its bark.

The cork that gets used in our cork floors is recycled post-industrial waste from wine bottle stopper factories.

    where can i use it?

EcoCork planks work well in most rooms; however, they are not recommended for damp or steamy rooms such as the bath. They can be installed right over most existing floors.

    how much will i need?

EcoCork comes in boxes with 23 square foot of cork flooring material.

how do i install or apply it?

As is common with other floating products, EcoCork planks require a perimeter expansion space that must be covered by baseboard or other trim.

    how do i maintain it?

Lasting beauty can be achieved by purchasing a top quality material and providing proper on-going maintenance. This begins with remembering two key properties of cork, its ability to fade with exposure to light and the fact that it will react to heat and humidity.

EcoCork contains organic pigments. Just like other wood products, cork will lighten over time and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight should be avoided. Using drapes or other systems to protect your floor from excessive light will slow down this process. Cork will naturally yellow or mellow with age. Uneven exposure to light sources may cause uneven ageing so it is a good idea to rotate furnishings periodically.

All floor systems using wood products expand and contract in response to fluctuations in temperature and humidity. By controlling the environment, maintaining a moderate temperature and relative humidity around 50%, one can minimize the visible effects of the normal contraction and expansion of your floor.

It is important to sweep or vacuum the floor regularly in order to avoid build up of abrasive particles that can scratch the finish. Most cleaners specified for use on pre-finished hardwood will also work with EcoCork, but be sure to read packaging for correct information. These cleaners should be sprayed or misted over the surface and damp-mopped up as you go. It is not a good idea to use the old "bucket and mop" cleaning method on a Natural Cork floor. Spills should be wiped up immediately.

In the kitchen, use a non-rubber backed rug in front of working areas such as in front of the stove and sink to prevent local premature wear. Weight distribution is a key factor in preventing indentation. To minimize impressions in the resilient cork, furniture should have proper protectors under feet and furniture with casters should have wide casters.
