    the story

For decades, vinyl composition tile (VCT) has been the standard resilient flooring for commercial and public spaces. VCT has one major attraction: it’s cheap. But it’s environmentally unfriendly, it requires continual maintenance, and it’s not particularly durable. Maintenance costs can easily equal the cost of installation, every single year.

Marmoleum has a better solution: Marmoleum Composition Tile (MCT). MCT is a true-linoleum floor covering made from natural, readily renewable materials. It costs a little more up-front than vinyl, but it lasts longer, performs better and requires much less maintenance. Over 10 years, it saves about $14.50 per square foot in upkeep and replacement costs.

    performance

MCT is made to last. In fact, it has double the service life of its vinyl counterpart. It’s at least 10 times more dent-resistant than vinyl, and its performance is enhanced by time: exposure to air hardens it, so it actually becomes more durable with age.

Vinyl composition tile shrinks over time, leaving gaps that can harbor dirt and bacteria, but MCT retains its shape, and it can be heat-welded so that seams are sealed and waterproof. If MCT gets scratched, dented or burned, it can be repaired. MCT also has better stain resistance than VCT, which is made with fillers that readily absorb stains.

MCT comes pre-finished with TopShield, a tough protective coating that preserves the floor’s appearance and lowers cleaning costs. The factory-applied finish has two layers, and the bottom one is cured with UV light to be very hard. VCT, by contrast, requires on-site application of several coats of finish after installation, and it must be stripped and re-finished regularly throughout its life.

MCT is a pleasure to live with. It’s easy on the legs, and quieter underfoot than VCT

    at home

MCT contains no asbestos and no formaldehyde or other hazardous ingredients. Like all true linoleum products, it has natural properties that make the addition of toxic chemicals unnecessary: it’s inherently fire-resistant; it inhibits the growth of mold, mildew and microbes; and it repels dirt, so you can easily maintain a clean, healthy environment.

Vinyl composition tile (VCT) comes with concerns about chemical emissions from the repeated stripping and waxing required for maintenance. MCT has a factory-applied coating of TopShield, a water-based finish that never needs stripping or waxing.

    on the planet

Conventional vinyl composition flooring is a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) (link to glossary) product. PVC can pose serious health risks for workers involved in manufacturing it, and when burned, it produces the toxic chemical dioxin. The US Green Building Council classifies PVC as “among the worst materials for human health impacts."

MCT is made from natural ingredients – primarily linseed oil, wood flour and rosins. All of these materials are readily renewable. There are no toxic byproducts generated during production.

MCT’s long service life reduces demand on landfills and the need to produce replacement flooring.

    where can i use it?

Marmoleum composition tiles are suitable for any venue, including high-traffic areas such as school corridors. MCT has excellent resistance to indentation marks, making it ideal for use in offices where there are chairs with castors. Its static load limit is 1500 pounds per square inch, more than 10 times that of many vinyl composition tiles.

    how do i install it?

    Installation instructions

Marmoleum composition tiles are glued directly to the subfloor. Like other resilient flooring, linoleum telegraphs the shape of whatever’s underneath, so the underlayment should be carefully prepped to make sure it’s level.

However, MCT shouldn’t be installed in areas, such as basements, where moisture is coming through the subfloor. You can’t tell by looking. Use a calcium chloride test kit. (Call us to order one)

Laying out the tiles is a challenging process requiring the installer to create reference lines and measure angles. We provide installation services through our stores.

    how do i maintain it?

Sweep, dust mop, damp mop and/or vacuum as needed. Because true linoleum is anti-static by nature, keeping it clean should be fairly simple. Marmoleum comes with three coats of factory finish already applied. When you have installed your Marmoleum Click floor, please follow the instructions for initial care:

    Initial Care Following Installation:

    1. Remove loose soil and grit by sweeping, dust mopping or, preferably, vacuuming the floor. Micro-fiber dusters are also recommended.
    2. Dilute 1 ounce (3 capfuls) of Marmoleum Floor Cleaner in 1 gallon of clean water.
Note: Marmoleum is made from natural raw materials. The use of harsh alkalis or high pH cleaners (such as Ammonia or similar products) may damage Marmoleum and should be avoided.
    3. Apply the cleaning solution with a mop or sponge. Do not flood the floor or use too much water.
    4. Pick up any soil and excess cleaner with a clean mop or cloth. When mopping, rinse the mop frequently and change the solution as needed.
    5. A non-abrasive nylon scrubbing pad can be used for cleaning small stubborn spots. For larger areas of stubborn soil, a long handled, soft bristled nylon scrub brush is ideal.
    6. Rinse the floor with a clean, damp mop.
    7. Allow the floor to thoroughly dry before allowing traffic.

For ingrained dirt, a scrubbing sponge (non-abrasive) or nylon brush is ideal. When damp mopping, always follow with a clean water rinse and allow the floor to thoroughly dry before allowing traffic. When light cleaning no longer produces the desired results, repeat the recommendations for Initial Care.

The vast majority of spills, including pet accidents, can be cleaned off your Marmoleum:

    1. Act quickly.
    2. Blot as much as possible or carefully scrape dried spills with a plastic scraper.
    3. Mop with diluted Marmoleum Cleaner.
    4. Damp mop with clean water.
    5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 if necessary.

If the stain persists, as it may with glue, varnish, paint, ink, tar, cosmetics, shoe polish, some wines, coffee and some other substances, the solution is to remove the surface finish and the stain with it. Apply undiluted Marmoleum cleaner to the stained area and leave in contact with the floor for 2–3 minutes. Rub with a nylon kitchen pad and then rinse with clean water. Repeat if necessary. Once the floor is dry, apply a small amount of finish in the affected area to restore the gloss.

In rare cases of extreme damage, for example, a deep gouge in the surface of the material, a patch may be made by creating a paste with ground up marmoleum of the same color and style and Elmer's glue.
