    the story

Medite II medium-density fiberboard (MDF), like all MDF products, consists of wood fibers bound with a synthetic resin. Medite II is made with a formaldehyde-free resin, eliminating worries about off-gassing after installation. This is a particularly important issue with MDF because it contains a higher percentage of resin than plywood, particleboard and other panel products.

    performance

Although MDF is sometimes described as particleboard, it is far more dense and homogeneous. It is made from individually separated wood fibers, not chips, as particleboard is. Because there is no grain, each sheet can be cut into smaller parts efficiently, without regard for how they are aligned. Miters and other joinery remain tight.

Medite II cannot be used outdoors or as a structural panel—meaning roofs, floors or wall sheathing.

    Practical benefits include:

    • As easy to work as other MDF products.
    • Accepts finishes well.

    how much do i need?

Medite II is sold in 4-foot x 8-foot panels ½ and ¾ inch thick.

how do i install or apply it?

Working with Medite II medium-density fiberboard (MDF)

Like all wood products, Medite II reacts to moisture in its environment. Allow the panels to adjust to the humidity of your indoor environment by storing them for two or three days before you use them. Medite panels should be stored indoors on a flat, level surface with sufficient support to prevent sagging.

Screws are the preferred fasteners, especially straight-shank sheet metal screws. Tapered wood screws may pull loose. Drill pilot holes. Screws should be installed not less than 1 inch from the edge of the panel or 2 inches from the corners, and they should be at least 6 inches apart to avoid splitting the panel.

    safety

All sawdust is considered hazardous to the respiratory system, and cutting and shaping MDF generates copious amounts. Operate saws and other equipment with vacuums whenever possible. Always wear a respirator that works—in this case, one that filters particles. Ear and eye protection are also important.
