    the story

Although it was considered old-fashioned for many years, natural linoleum is enjoying a renaissance today because of its environmental and practical benefits. Marmoleum, a true linoleum flooring, is made from linseed oil, pine rosins, and wood flour, pigments calendared onto a natural jute backing – all natural, biodegradable ingredients.

Invented in England in the mid-1800s, linoleum quickly caught on as an ideal floor covering, especially for kitchens and bathrooms. Water-resistant, easy to clean and beautiful, it was even used on kitchen countertops. But linoleum manufacturers didn't update their designs, and vinyl took over in the 1960s and early 1970s. The last linoleum factory in the United States closed in 1975.

We obtain our linoleum from one of three remaining factories, all in Europe. Forbo's factory is just outside Amsterdam. There, linoleum is still made basically as it was 150 years ago, except that the recipe no longer includes cork dust or pigments with heavy metals.

The current recipe consists of linseed oil (from which the flooring gets its name), pigments, pine rosin and pine flour. The pine comes from planted forests in Europe. This mix is heated and "calendered"-or run through rollers that press the flooring into a sheet and onto a fabric backing, in this case a natural jute backing. The fresh linoleum is then looped around rungs and hung in towers to cure.

    performance

Marmoleum is true linoleum. It’s colorfast, and extremely durable. The color goes all the way through, so wear spots aren’t very noticeable, and scuffs and scratches can be buffed out. Even cigarette burns rub away with a nylon pad or steel wool.

True linoleum floors outperform vinyl floors hands down - in fact Marmoleum is often referred to as "the 40 year floor." Whereas many vinyl floors need to be replaced every few years, Marmoleum just gets tougher as time goes on because it is made from linseed oil that continues to cure, hardening as it ages. Marmoleum's static load limit is 150 pounds per square inch; double that of many vinyl composition tiles. The color and pattern of the material go all the way through, so the design survives the life of the floor. Compare this to most vinyl flooring which has just a thin layer of color under a thin layer of plastic on the surface, that gets easily damaged as kids track in sand or the dog scratches the floor.

Marmoleum comes pre-finished with TopShield, a tough protective coating that preserves the floor’s appearance and lowers cleaning costs. The factory-applied finish has two layers, and the bottom one is cured with UV light to be very hard. No waxing is required, and the finish is easily maintained with Forbo finish (rarely necessary.)

    at home

Linoleum is a completely natural material that contains no vinyl, no asbestos and no other hazardous ingredients. It won’t emit, or off-gas, fumes that can pollute the air in your home. But Marmoleum is good for more than just your indoor air quality - it is also naturally anti-bacterial, preventing salmonella, staph, mold, mildew and other microbes from multiplying on its surface. And because it is also anti-static, dust will not cling to the floor, making it a great choice for those with allergies and asthma concerns.

The factory-applied TopShield finish is water-based, and there’s never a need to use chemical strippers or waxes. It can be maintained without harsh cleaning products.

    on the planet

Marmoleum is made from natural, readily renewable ingredients, primarily linseed oil, pine rosin and wood flour. There are no toxic ingredients added, and no toxic byproducts are generated during production.

Linoleum’s extremely long service life reduces demand on landfills and the need to produce replacement flooring. Not only is it sustainable because it lasts so long, it is alos actually biodegradable at the end of its life. In fact, the manufacturer of Marmoleum has set up a composting program in its Mid-Atlantic distribution facility. Product scraps from installation and manufacturing are collected and sent to regional compost facilities. The program has diverted nearly 20 tons of solid waste per month from landfills and has reduced the amount of solid waste from the facility by 85%.

    where can i use it?

Linoleum flooring is for interior use only. The subfloor should be flat, smooth and free of imperfections since even tiny imperfections in the subfloor will show in the surface of your linoleum floor after a few days. Appropriate subfloors include: underlayment grade plywood or concrete (test to ensure moisture is within allowable limits).

Because this material is naturally anti-bacterial, it is also a good (and inexpensive) choice for countertops.

    how much do i need?

Marmoleum sheet materials comes from rolls that are 79 inches (6’ 7”) wide.

Sheet goods are priced by the square foot but sold by the linear foot. When you place your order, be sure to order the number of linear feet you will need. We will automatically convert that measure to square feet to determine pricing.

how do i install or apply it?

We strongly recommend that you hire a professional to install your Marmoleum sheet material. Be sure that the installer you are working with has experience with natural linoleum as the rules are different than when installing a common vinyl floor.

Before installing your Marmoleum sheet good, you must allow it to acclimate in the space where it will be installed for at least 24 hours. The room should be maintained at 68 degrees Fahrenheit for 3 days minimum prior to, during and after installation.

Forbo makes a low VOC, trowel-on adhesive for the sheet good. When the adhesive has been applied to the subfloor according to specifications, roll the Marmoleum onto the subfloor with a 100 lb. roller (available for rent from local hardware stores.)

Do not wash floor for 72 hours min. to allow floor to cure. After 72 hours, follow the intial care instructions below.

At first, you may notice that your Marmoleum floor seems to have a yellow tint to it, but please do not worry. This is a natural result of the linseed oil in the material. After a few days the yellow tinge will resolve itself as the natural oils have a chance to react to the light in the room.

    how do i maintain it?

Marmoleum is easy to care for. Unlike vinyl, linoleum is anti-static, so it actually repels dust. Keep it dirt-free with a dry dust mop or vacuum, and remove spots with a neutral cleaner and damp cloth or mop.

For regular cleaning, use the Forbo Floor Cleaner in diluted form. You can also periodically use the Forbo Floor Finish in diluted form as a cleaner that will add more wax to the floor.

The TopShield is designed to last the entire lifespan of the floor. However, it is possible to renovate the TopShield finish with the Forbo Floor Finish if the original finish becomes damaged.

Sweep, dust mop, damp mop and/or vacuum as needed. Because true linoleum is anti-static by nature, keeping it clean should be fairly simple. Marmoleum comes with three coats of factory finish already applied. When you have installed your Marmoleum Click floor, please follow the instructions for initial care:
