    the story

Move aside, polyurethane. These wood finishes have exemplary environmental credentials, AND they compromise nothing in quality.

Vermont Natural Coating’s formulations use whey protein as the primary bonding agent. Whey is a natural byproduct of cheese-making, and a renewable resource. It makes for a very low-VOC wood finish, which means better indoor air quality for you.

PolyWhey natural wood finishes are twice as hard as the conventional water-based polyurethane products you’ll find at most stores. They dry fast, they don’t yellow over time, and there’s no noxious odor.

We have Vermont Natural Coating finishes for wood floors and furniture. The furniture finish comes in gloss, semi-gloss and satin sheens. Floor finish is available in semi-gloss or satin.

    performance

PolyWhey is more durable than the average water-based wood finish. When cured, it’s twice as hard as the polyurethane-type finishes you’ll find at the big-box or hardware stores. It resists scratches, chemicals, and water, and it’s long-wearing, even in areas with heavy foot traffic.

PolyWhey finishes are much more pleasant to work with than traditional polyurethanes. They’re low-odor, and there’s no residual smell when the coating is cured. Coverage is better, too: while conventional water-based finishes have an average coating coverage of 300 to 400sq.ft./gallon, PolyWhey's coverage is 500-600sq.ft./gallon PolyWhey natural finishes have excellent flow, which makes them easy to apply with a brush, spray gun, or lambs wool.

PolyWhey dries more quickly than other finishes do: you can re-coat in as little as 2 to 3 hours. It won’t yellow over time.

    at home

Many conventional wood-finishes still contain formaldehyde, a suspected human carcinogen that can “off-gas” into your home and cause respiratory and skin problems. PolyWhey is formaldehyde-free. Its VOC levels are lower than the strictest U.S. indoor air quality standards, with levels below 180g/L (grams per liter). That’s 25% less than the VOC standard that other water-based finishes try to meet.

PolyWhey’s low-VOC formulation has very little odor. You won’t need to move out while the floors dry.

    on the planet

The production of wood finishes has traditionally relied on petroleum, a non-renewable resource. PolyWhey is derived primarily from whey, a by-product of cheese making and a renewable resource. Whey has a high BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) that can increase the burden on waste treatment facilities and can pollute rivers and lakes. Reformulating whey into a wood finish takes it out of the waste stream and puts it to a useful purpose.

    where can i use it?

PolyWhey finishes can be used on any unfinished interior wood surface.

    how much do i need?

PolyWhey's coverage is 500-600sq.ft./gallon, about 60% more than the coverage rate for conventional polyurethane-type products.

how do i install or apply it?

PolyWhey natural finishes have excellent flow, which makes them easy to apply with a brush, spray gun, or lambs wool. If you’re applying them to previously finished wood, be sure to sand off the old finish before applying PolyWhey. However, PolyWhey is compatible with many conventional polyurethane finishes.

    how do i maintain it?

Because it creates a thin, hard film over the wood’s surface, PolyWhey provides a very water-resistant finish. Just dust mop or vacuum regularly and wipe off dirt with a damp mop.

Like conventional polyurethanes, PolyWhey cannot be spot-repaired; the entire room must be screened or sanded and a new finish coat applied. (Our plant-oil floor and furniture finishes, such as Osmo Polyx-Oil, can be touched up in spots maintained so the finish lasts indefinitely.)
