    the story

Tigerwood is an exotic wood species from the forests of South America. Red with dramatic light and dark stripes running through it, Tigerwood will weather to a light silvery gray color over time. Sometimes used for flooring, Tigerwood is an especially effective species for decking because it is very dense, it is naturally rot resistant, and is very dimensionally stable.

Because Ecohaus’ goal is to promote sustainable forestry verified by outside inspectors, we sell decking that is certified through the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). FSC is a non-profit group that has taken the worldwide lead in promoting wise management of commercial timberland. By purchasing tropical decking that is FSC-certified you are helping to keep tropical forests healthy and standing.

    performance

Rot resistant, easy to maintain, very long-lasting, and exceptionally strong Tigerwood is an optimum choice for outdoor living surfaces. It can withstand temperature changes with minimal warping. The tannins which naturally occur in the wood make it exceptionally rot resistant so it does not require a finish. A Tigerwood deck can last 25+ years due to it’s resistance against rotting, decay and termite damage.

Tigerwood is structurally strong and resistant against splitting and warping. Because of its strength, less material may be needed to properly secure your deck compared to softer woods.

    at home

Because it’s not treated with pesticides, Tigerwood can be used near ponds or other wet areas without fear of contamination. You may choose to leave Tigerwood unfinished and let it age naturally. This not only makes maintenance easy, but it also allows you to avoid using potentially harmful products to treat your deck.

    on the planet

Our Tigerwood decking has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to come from responsibly managed forests.

With a typical lifespan of 25-30 years, a Tigerwood deck will not have to be replaced as often as many other decking materials. It has the added benefit, at the end of its life, of being recycled or in the case of damaged wood – ground up and used as mulch. Completely biodegradable, there is no reason for a Tigerwood deck to have to go to the landfill.

    in the community

In addition to the FSC’s very strict environmental guidelines they also require that local and native communities are treated justly. These guidelines also make sure that local laws and customary rights of indigenous people to own, use, and manage their lands, territories, and resources are recognized and respected. Forest management operations certified by FSC must maintain or enhance the long-term social and economic well being of forest workers and local communities. Communities that profit from responsible forest management, are less likely to clear cut in favor of mass-agriculture.

    how much do I need?

Our Tigerwood comes in 5/4” x 6” and in lengths from 6’ to 20’.

    how do i install?

Cut ends for this wood should be sealed immediately after cutting using a clear wax to reduce end checking. Be sure to buy Anchor Seal for this purpose when purchasing your deck material.

A long-lasting deck like Tigerwood require screws and fasteners that will outlast the life of the wood. Ecohaus offers the following systems:

    Screw systems:
If you use self-drilling screws, such as the Swaneze line we sell from Swan Secure Products, we recommend (but is not necessary) to first pre-bore countersinks (shallow holes that allow the screw heads to seat properly). We recommend this screw (type 316) because it is highly resistant to corrosion. As an alternative, skip the countersink holes, drill 9/64-inch pilot holes and use stainless steel #7 trim-head screws.

The proper length of a fastener is 1 1/2 times the thickness of the decking. Be sure to pre-drill holes and countersink the screw heads.

    Invisible systems:
Instead of screwing through the exposed face of the decking, many installers now use hidden fasteners. Swan's EB-TY "invisible" deck fastening system uses stainless steel screws and football-shaped clips made of ultraviolet-resistant polypropylene, designed to last for a century. The inserts fit into slots that the builder cuts into the sides of the decking boards with a biscuit joiner or router. The system allows the decking to be installed from the top.

    how do maintain it

Probably the most attractive features of a tropical wood deck is that because it is naturally rot and warp resistant it will require very little maintenance. If left unfinished a tropical wood deck need only be regularly swept and kept clear of leaves and debris.

Tigerwood will naturally patina to a light silvery gray color over time. If you would like to preserve the red hues and dramatic stripes of the new wood we recommend finishing it with Bio-Wash Natural Deck Oil.
