the story
RAIS stoves are carefully handcrafted in Denmark by skilled craftsmen. Why do we go to such great lengths to offer you this stove? We offer you this stove because, quite simply, it's the best stove you can buy. Here's why.
Much like the Pacific Northwest, Denmark has beautiful summers. And, much like the Northwest, Denmark has long, dark, gloomy winters. To compensate, Danes strive to create a feeling at home called hygge, which, roughly translated, means coziness. Candles, warm colors, and good friends all contribute to the experience of hygge (pronounced HOOG-uh.) But nothing brings the authentic experience of hygge to your home like a RAIS stove.
RAIS stoves can lower your heating costs, too. With the cost of natural gas these days, wood can be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to heat your home. RAIS wood stoves are particularly appropriate for our region because they make extremely efficient use of a locally available, readily renewable resource. While other stoves may look similar, only RAIS stoves feature such thoughtful details like the intelligent stay cool handle. Air for combustion is drawn into the curving, hollow handle, keeping it cool and comfortable to the touch even with a big fire. RAIS stoves are efficient, and clean, too - the baffle burning system works without a catalytic converter - and cleaner burning results in less ash to clean out of the stove. In fact, these stoves are so easy to light that you'll find yourself enjoying a cozy - or hygge - fire throughout the winter.
Complete your RAIS stove installation or upgrade an existing fireplace with a precisely crafted set of RAIS tools. When choosing your RAIS stove, consider both capacity - even the smallest stove will heat 860 square feet - and remember that soapstone, a standard feature on some stoves and an option on others, helps to retain heat overnight, cutting the morning chill.
How does it work?
The stoves use a series of baffle plates (made of skamol, a type of vermeculite) to channel air flow inside the firebox to ensure complete combustion and minimal particulate emissions. They are highly efficient at getting a high amount of energy (in the form of heat) out of wood. They are carbon dioxide neutral, which means that as they are burning, they release the same amount of CO2 as if the wood were decomposing naturally. Heat is radiated from the stove body, glass and optional soapstone plates on the top and sides. Soapstone holds heat for 4-6 hours after the fire goes out.
performance
RAIS stoves heat space using both radiant and convective heat. RAIS stoves draw cool air from low in the room, heat up the air with a series of vermiculite baffles and then release the heated air into the room. Most stoves use steel baffles that are not as efficient at capturing heat. This creates a convective loop which continually transfers warm air into the room. The fire box is lined with Skamol a vermiculite or volcanic rock that is more effective than fire brick at holding and transferring heat. Easy temperature control. One control automatically adjusts the air flow in three different locations.
