    the story

Faux finishes have become very popular as a way of imitating the color-saturated, handcrafted look of Old World stucco. Lime paint allows homeowners and professional painters to create these beautiful effects authentically. Painted on and left to dry, lime paint has a lush, velvety look. When polished, the paint glows in a way that’s unlike any other surface treatment. Walls appear to have texture, but feels smooth at the same time.

This paint is made from 95% natural ingredients. The lime in it is hydrated lime, meaning it cures by reacting with carbon dioxide in the air re-absorbing carbon that was burned off in the manufacturing process. Other ingredients include a type of clay, marble dust, water and 2-5% latex binder.

This is sold as a white paint only. Tint to pastel or vibrant colors, as desired, with our Ochres & Oxides pigments, or we Ecohaus has developed a custom pallet that can be tinted when purchased in the store.

    performance

Lime paint dries naturally with a matte finish that looks like velvet. Polishing warms the color, adds sheen, accentuates any texture on the wall and makes brush movements more visible. Control the amount of sheen by changing the amount of pressure you apply. Burnishing also makes the color appear mottled.

    Olivetti Exterior Lime paint
A beautiful exterior option to paint. Hydraulic lime repels impurities and allows walls to breathe. It will not flake. Applied as interior lime, exterior lime paint offers the depth and modeling of traditional European lime washed exteriors. It can be applied on clean cement, plaster, lime backgrounds, bricks an blocks. The product comes to you dry and is to be mixed 1 volume of powder to 2 volumes of clean water. Thorough mixing is essential. The first coat may be sprayed on. Product is to be applied using a lime brush, applying material evenly and quickly enough to avoid dry joints from forming. Unlike the interior lime paint, it is better not to overlap into drying sections. You can apply as many coats as desired to achieve your look. We recommend no less than three coats. Protect walls from rain for five days.

    • A traditional natural paint used on stone buildings for centuries..
    • Forms a permanent bond with porous materials like concrete, so you won’t have to paint again for 50 years.
    • Has the look of fine plaster.
    • Allows walls to breathe. Does not retain impurities or dust, nor does it flake.
    • Tint with earthground pigments for a full array of colors.
    • May be used on old or new porous walls.
    • Not intended for use on painted or primed surfaces. Exterior only.

    how much do i need?

One gallon of lime paint covers approximately 250 to 300 square feet with one coat, depending on porosity of the surface. Two coats are usually needed over unpainted plaster or over walls that are newly skim-coated with drywall topping mix and not primed. Previously painted or primed surfaces may need three coats. On second and third coats, one gallon may cover a larger area. These coats don’t have to completely or evenly cover the first one.

Plan batches of standard lime paint so that you will have a little left over for touchups. It is difficult to replicate exact colors later. If you apply different tones to the wall, store each color separately and label the sequence. Store leftovers in airtight containers. Do not allow to freeze.

If you have stored paint for a long time, you may need to strain out any clumps that have formed.

With the sealer, one gallon of concentrate is enough for approximately 1,000 square feet or more in one coat. Use at least two coats.

    how do i apply it

Lime paint is quite different from standard paints and results depend on how you apply it. You can produce a weathered-wall look by changing the direction of the brush so that it goes up and down. On textured walls, you can skip areas so the white of the wall comes through. Some people apply two coats and others use five or more. Just remember that everything you do to one wall, you will have to do to every wall if you want a consistent look.
